Maersk Oil has won top awards for two films about the development of the giant Al Shaheen field in Qatar in partnership with Qatar Petroleum.

Using documentary-style footage from four different countries, 3D animations and interviews with key personal including CEO Jakob Thomasen, the films give insight into the field’s development and the challenges along the way. They also feature interviews with some key Maersk Oil partners – Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah and Saad Al-Kaabi, QP Director of Oil and Gas Ventures, who give strong endorsements to Maersk Oil’s key capabilities.

‘The Challenges of Al Shaheen’ tells the history of a field that was once considered too challenging to develop commercially to becoming Qatar’s largest offshore oil producer, now contributing one third of the country’s oil production. The film took the top award in the energy and nuclear issues category at the World Film Fest, Houston.

‘Setting a New Standard’ highlighted Qatar’s role in emission reduction when it was shown at the 2010 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Conference in Cancun, Mexico. Al Shaheen’s gas gathering system is the world’s largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project and has cut gas flaring in the field to pilot flaring only; a rare accomplishment in the industry.

‘Setting a New Standard’ picked up gold awards in the energy and nuclear issues category at World Fest Film and the public relations: technology category at the World Media Festival, Hamburg.
