Environmental Status Report 2007, Danish Oil and Gas Activities.
Maersk Oil has issued its Environmental Status Report 2007, which covers the oil and gas activities operated by Maersk Oil for DUC (Dansk Undergrunds Consortium) in the Danish North Sea.
The continued focus on environmental performance has resulted in further improvements in 2007, despite the increased challenge of field maturation.
The environmental performance targets for 2007 (as published in our Environmental Status Report 2006) have been met. Specific performance targets for 2008 have been set out in this report to ensure continuous improvement.
Key findings in the Environmental Status Report 2007 include:
· Oil and gas production was lower in 2007 than in 2006, mainly due to the natural decline in production from the Danish fields. However, as predicted, water production and the requirement for treatment and disposal of produced water increased in 2007.
· The total volume of produced water discharged to sea increased slightly in 2007, as did the volume of produced water re-injected into the subsoil, but the average crude oil content in discharged and re-injected water was further reduced compared to previous years.
· Offshore energy consumption in 2007 was at the same level as in 2006, despite increased water handling requirements, whereas flaring of gas was reduced by approximately 10% as a result of production optimisation.
· In addition, the total amount of CO2 emissions from offshore activities in 2007 was at the same level as in 2006, whereas other atmosphere emissions were reduced.
· Total discharges to sea from drilling operations (drilling mud and well cuttings) were reduced significantly in 2007, but remain dependent on the number and the length of wells drilled.
· Chemicals discharged to sea were reduced significantly in 2007. The phase-out of chemicals with undesirable environmental effects continues with an objective of phasing out all so-called red chemicals in 2008.
It is our hope that this report will provide clarity about ongoing efforts to ensure that offshore oil and gas operations are efficient and carried out with due respect for the environment.
